An American Tragedy—Part One

This is book one of two. An American Tragedy follows Clyde Griffiths, a young man born into poverty and religious rigidity, who yearns for wealth, status, and acceptance in American society. After leaving his missionary parents, Clyde becomes entangled in a fatal accident and flees west, eventually finding work at his wealthy uncle’s factory. There, he begins a secret relationship with Roberta Alden, a factory girl whose pregnancy threatens his social ambitions. At the same time, Clyde becomes infatuated with Sondra Finchley, a glamorous woman from high society who represents everything he desires. The novel presents a bleak examination of ambition, social inequality, and moral weakness in early twentieth-century America.
