Jude the Obscure follows Jude Fawley, a poor but ambitious stonemason in rural England who dreams of studying at Christminster, a fictionalized Oxford. Despite his intellectual gifts, Jude is continually blocked by class barriers and economic hardship. His impulsive marriage to Arabella Donn derails his plans further, trapping him in a union based on deceit and incompatibility. Jude later forms a deep and unconventional bond with his cousin, Sue Bridehead, whose modern, questioning views clash with Victorian social norms. Ultimately, the novel becomes a sharp critique of rigid morality, institutional hypocrisy, and the crushing limitations placed on the poor and the free-thinking.
